Chinguetti: the library of the desert

 

Chinguetti is a medieval trading centre in Mauritania.

Between the 13th and 17th centuries Sunni pilgrims en route to Mecca gathered here to trade, gossip and pray. In 200o Chinguetti was nominated UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is becoming smaller due to the extension of Sahara desert.

Its library is very rich, with 1.300 Koranic manuscripts.
