This is the first of a series of posts where we’ll collect manuals on expatriation.
Belonging Everywhere and Nowhere: Insights into Counseling the Globally Mobile, by Lois J. Bushong. Bushong is a families and couples therapist. SHe has worked with many people who grew up or have lived most of their lives abroad. Published by Mango Tree Intercultural Services, this book promises a dive into the real and practical dynamics of people that live abroad.

Moving without shaking by Yelena Mackay, concentrates on the careers of women who chose to expatriate, or have to do it to accompany a partner. Published by Pronoun Inc., Moving without shaking is rich of practical situations and tips.
Living abroad Succesfully: What, where, when and how by Rachel Smets, a Dutch who quit her long term job in the Netherlands to embrace life as a globetrotter. Doubts and fears are plenty in starting a life abroad, especially if you want to make it into a lifestyle. Rachel guides us in making our choice.
Once upon an expat, by Lisa Webb, should probably not cited amongst the manuals on living abroad, since it is mainly a collection of stories of people living outside of what they call their country of origin. Yet, it is exactly through the richness and variety of these stories that we discover the varied, challenging and enriching world of international life.

Along Lisa’s lines we find Moving Abroad – One step at the time by Rafael dos Santos. Rafael starts from personal stories and experiences of expats in varied situations abroad, to draw conclusions and draft a step by step map for anyone who wished to create a project of life abroad. G.T. Donnellan has a real wide experience of living abroad, since it goes from Sub-Saharian African countries to the megalopolis of Asia. It’s on his story – and those he listened to from dozens of expats met on his path – that Expat life: New beginnings is based. It’s a book that answers the most emotionally charged questions imposed by the choice of living abroad.
Rosalind Kalb and Penelope Welch, with their Moving your family overseas, look at the choice of living abroad from the family point of view. Because moving abroad with the whole family is different from doing it alone or with just the partner. Among the manuals on living abroad that face the topic including children as well, this is surely one of the most read and used.
