{"id":8441,"date":"2026-03-15T11:54:28","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T11:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/expatbooks.org\/?p=8441"},"modified":"2026-03-15T12:03:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T12:03:49","slug":"celebrating-harmony-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/expatbooks.org\/en\/celebrating-harmony-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Harmony Week\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Since I moved to Australia and my children started school, we have been joining the celebration of a national tradition held in March,\u00a0<strong>Harmony Week<\/strong>. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Harmony Week<\/strong>\u00a0celebrates and acknowledges that Australia is made up of many different cultures, languages and traditions. It is a way to promote\u00a0<strong>respect, inclusion, and cultural diversity<\/strong>. My children used to\u00a0wear their Italian t-shirts proudly, but being born in the Netherlands and growing up in different places, they sometimes  swapped them for\u00a0<b>orange<\/b>, which is the colour chosen to represent the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year,\u00a0<strong>Harmony Week<\/strong>\u00a0runs from 16 to 22 March. From 2024, to recognise the importance of anti-racism actions, the 21st of March has become the\u00a0<strong>International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>IDERD<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebrations are taking place in schools, workplaces, libraries, and community centres where people organise events, share food, and learn about different traditions and languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This post offers a small collection of picture book titles that my children and I loved reading during <strong>Harmony Week<\/strong> and beyond. They are resources that help start conversations about\u00a0<strong>respect<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>diversity<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>multicultural understanding<\/strong>, which are the main ideas behind the celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile animated fadeInLeft\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 29%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">My two blankets <\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>by\u00a0<strong>Irena Kobald<\/strong>, illustrated by\u00a0<strong>Freya Blackwood<\/strong>, tells the story of a girl, Cartwheel, who moves to a new country to escape a war and feels lonely and confused by the unfamiliarity of many things, such as people, places and language. But soon she meets a friendly girl who helps her learn new words. In\u00a0<strong>Morocco<\/strong>, another boy travels with his family from their desert village to the market. The book is wordless; however, through detailed collage illustrations,\u00a0<strong>Jeannie Baker<\/strong>\u00a0gently shows their daily routines. Although their homes, landscapes, and cultures are different, the boys\u2019 lives reflect the same love of family, work, and community. Reading this book is a remarkable experience.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile animated fadeInLeft\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 34%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">I am Australian too\u00a0<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>by <strong>Mem Fox<\/strong>, illustrated by <strong>Ronojoy Ghosh<\/strong>, \u00a0is an Australian classic. We find the stories of children whose families come from many parts of the world but now live in\u00a0Australia. The book celebrates different <strong>cultures<\/strong>, <strong>languages<\/strong>, and histories. The story explains the Aboriginal tradition of welcoming visitors to Country and caring for the land, animals, and waterways. As they walk together on Country, the girl listens to stories, notices animals and plants, and learns about her family\u2019s culture.
